Digital library for future generations
On May 17, 2021, Verbatim, thanks to the efforts of its long-term partner, ERGODATA, the largest supplier of Verbatim information storage products in Russia, entered into an agreement with the Russian State Library (RSL), according to which Verbatim will donate 6,000 CD-R discs to the library.
The project starting today will allow one of the largest libraries in the world to take a significant step in promoting the program for the translation of books into digital form, which began in 1995. Within the walls of the library there is a collection of works by domestic and foreign authors, unique in its completeness and universal in content, as well as extremely important and valuable historical documents.
According to Alexander Ivanovich Visly, Deputy Director General of the RSL, the provided 6,000 carriers will allow digitalizing up to 100 thousand titles of books within a year (the data will be stored and recorded in pdf format, about 1,500 books have already been prepared for recording).
The benefits of such a project are obvious. Firstly, the existence of an electronic duplicate of the book will help preserve the life of old books and, secondly, make available to the reader rare titles that are not handed out in a “live” form. Many digitized materials will be further available for viewing via the Internet.
Jurgen Fritz, President of Verbatim for Europe, Middle East and Africa, in his speech today, expressed confidence that this is not a one-off project and Verbatim’s cooperation with RSL will be long-term. “As we use the first batch of discs, we are ready to make new deliveries in the amount required for further work on the digitization of books…”, said Jurgen Fritz.
Kirill Kvashenko, CEO of ERGODATA, also confirmed his company’s readiness to contribute to the project and expressed hope for further development of the program.
At the press conference, Kvashenko more than once operated on the data from our CD-R testing, where Verbatim really demonstrates one of the best results.
