Dolby: surround sound in the car
Dolby Laboratories unveils its new standard for in-car surround sound – Dolby Surround in Motion. The demonstration is now taking place at CES – the showpiece was the BMW X5, equipped with all the new technologies from Dolby: Dolby Digital, Dolby Surround Pro Logic II and Dolby Headphone, which are part of Surround in Motion.
Dolby decided to create a unified standard for car manufacturers in a similar move.
Here are some of Dolby’s contributions to Sound in Motion:
- Dolby Digital 5.1, a standard known to work with digital 5.1 signal
- Dolby Surround Pro Logic II is a technology that transforms conventional stereo sound into surround sound
- Dolby Headphone – headphone surround sound technology from Dolby
- MLP Lossless – the technology behind the DVD-Audio format. One of the most advanced formats: true uncompressed six-channel 24-bit / 96 kHz audio recorded on DVD-Audio disc.
Dolby technologies are already used by car radio makers such as Alpine, Clarion, Kenwood, Matsushita (Panasonic), Mitsubishi (Diatone), Fujitsu Ten (Eclipse), Pioneer and Rockford-Fosgate. Soon they will present their systems fully compatible with Sound in Motion.
Alpine, Clarion, Zapco and Rockford-Fosgate are now showing their Pro Logic II systems at CES. Volvo will showcase its SUV with built-in Pro Logic II at the Detroit Auto Show (January 12-21). Systems with full Sound in Motion support will be shown by these companies towards the middle of the year.Source: 3D Sound Surge
