1.05 GHz Ultrasparc III – early 2021
Sun Microsystems announced that the UltraSparc III processor line will be expanded with a new 1.05 GHz processor early next year. The chip has some differences from its predecessors in the UltraSparc III line. Firstly, thanks to improvements in the technology of using copper connections carried out at the Texas Instruments factory (it will be TI that will produce these chips). Second, according to Sun, the compiler used has also improved.
The new version of the processor will be manufactured using the same 0.15 micron technology as the currently “top” 900 MHz version. Both models use special “low-K” dielectrics.
The Ultrasparc III, introduced a year ago, is present in the same market sector as the rest of the heavyweights: IBM Power, HP PA-RISC and Intel Itanium. For one to four processor servers, Sun is developing a cheaper version of the Ultrasparc III – IIIi “Jalapeno”, which will contain 87 million. transistors (mainly 1 MB of high-speed on-chip cache will be added) and will be manufactured by TI at 0.13 micron standards. Jalapeno will be able to shutdown unused blocks to reduce power consumption.
