Intel announces that its Microprocessor Research Lab has begun a series of studies focusing on the transition from aluminum and copper connections in computers to fiber optic filaments. According to scientists, the latter can be used both for connecting external components, and, theoretically, for intra-chip connections.

The meaning of such research is obvious: adding new transistors increases signal interference. Optical connections that use laser beams instead of electrical pulses would help solve some of these problems due to their low power consumption. The use of fiber is unlikely to lead to lower prices or simplify the task in general, but, nevertheless, it can become the main alternative to unnecessary chains of gluttonous transistors. In addition to lower power consumption, fiber is also faster: copper wires, which are currently the main medium for interaction of computer components, allow data transfer at speeds up to 10 Gb / s (Intel expects to double this figure in a few years, which will extend the life of copper) , however, optical connections will allow data transmission at speeds from 30 to 60 Gbps.

Perhaps, say, in 10 years, optics will also penetrate into processors, where copper is just beginning to strengthen its position. However, so far, the cost of optical fiber is much higher than the cost of copper due to the cost of manufacturing lasers and devices for converting electrical signals at the input and output.

Interestingly, Tony Massimini, an analyst at Semico Research, commented on this: “The question is not whether the transition to fiber will take place, but when it will happen. But as long as there is no talk of large-scale production, it is one thing to make a prototype work, and another – to release it to the masses. “. According to him, it will take at least 10 years before fiber optic makes its way from connecting computers in a network to connecting elements of microcircuits, but the transition to optics is inevitable. However, it seems that Intel is not intimidated by such a timeframe; in the coming years, the announced processors with frequencies above 10 GHz should appear.
