Toshiba’s new integrated CMOS sensors
While CMOS sensors have long been used in digital cameras in the lower price sector, many manufacturers are trying to create a CMOS sensor that can compare with CCD in its parameters, especially with regard to sensitivity. Here’s another try: Toshiba has expanded its CMOS sensor lineup with four new models that the company says can match the CCD. Here are some of the improvements Toshiba has made:
- The photodiode array in the new sensors has been almost doubled, which will allow reaching the same levels as the entry-level CCDs (we are talking about 330 thousand. pixels required for VGA – 640 x 480).
- The sensitivity is doubled due to a decrease in the initial current of the photodiode, which threefold reduces the so-called “dark signal voltage” to 0.5 mV
- The integrated ADC has been improved and the design of the integrated photodiode (size – 5.4 x 5.4 microns) has been changed, which should reduce noise indicators and increase image quality
- New CMOS sensors are capable of working in conditions where the illumination is only 3 lux.
