The future of non-volatile memory through the eyes of Intel

At a press and analyst conference yesterday, Intel outlined its vision for the future of non-volatile memory by announcing two technologies it intends to focus on. This is the technology of memory on amorphous semiconductors (ovonics unified memory, OUM) and memory technology on polymer ferroelectrics (polymeric ferroelectric, FeRAM, or, as it is also called, PFRAM).

Intel has been working for a long time, without much fanfare, with its partners – Thin Film Electronics ASA and Ovonyx Inc., – over these technologies. Intel is also interested in work on magnetic memory (MRAM), mainly promoted by IBM, Infineon and Motorola, but believes that MRAM has “longer write cycles and higher price.”.

FeRAM, according to the plan, should eventually replace NOR flash memory and static (SRAM) memory in cell phones. According to Intel, the cost of manufacturing FeRAM is only one-eighth of the cost of manufacturing modern CMOS chips.

They talked about the successes achieved over several years of research by the Swedish Thin Film Electronics in the development of special groups of polymers for FeRAM memory devices, as well as the beginning of testing 4 MB OUM memory chips, aimed primarily for use in data storage devices. By the way, in OUM memory, approximately the same polymer, chalcogenide, will be used as a dielectric, which is currently used to make rewritable CD-ROMs and DVDs. The read / write time of test samples of 4 Mbit OUM chips is about 100 ns.
