X-Box and Internet Games

Another very interesting battle of open source software supporters with Microsoft is brewing. Craftsmen are going to create an online service for multiplayer games on XBox before Microsoft does, which is going to finish its project by next summer.

The “enthusiastic” XBox Gateway (you can get curious by following this link) will be based on Unix / Linux servers, but the client side does not have to install Linux at all – for now you can download a boot floppy.

In the plans – support for Win32, Mac OS X from the client side. XboxGW should work like a regular Ethernet bridge from a PC with Internet access to the XBox. However, in order to connect like this, you need to know at least the basics of building a network, which can be a problem for ordinary gamers, to whom the XBox is aimed.

All in all, a very interesting race. Will enthusiasts be the first to launch their system and take the jackpot from MS or not?? Time will tell…
